I don't blog about TV shows very often but I'll make an exception tonight as I have spent ten years watching this show. At times even I wondered why I bothered with it but the end was good enough that it justified sitting through some down years.
Tonight was the series finale of Smallville. After 10 seasons the show is done with. If you haven't yet watched the finale don't read any further.
It took a really long time but Smallville's Clark Kent finally put on the Superman suit and took flight. I watched all ten seasons of the show and I have to be honest, there were times where I wondered why I did so. There was a lot of stupidity along the way but I stuck by the show just because I am a big Superman guy. I don't think I would have for any other show because in the middle years this show was that horrible at times. This final season was great though. It truly did reward people like me who stuck by the show.
Unlike most fans of the show I wasn't a fan of the Chloe character. At times the show was too much about her and that never caught on with me. I wasn't a fan of the on again/off again (repeat process 3 times) love affairs but I get that it was a CW/WB show and they had to play to that network's audience. I wasn't a fan of him losing his powers multiple times either. At times they recycled old plotlines way too much. The show really did evolve over the years though. The whole "freak of the week" era seems so long ago. This series gave us probably the best portrayals of Lex Luthor and Lois Lane ever. I really liked how this show started with a friendship between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor. That story was brilliantly told.
What did you think of the finale? I thought the whole wedding part of the finale took way too long. It was kind of ridiculous to spend 45 minutes on it and then show at the end that 7 years later they still weren't married. That was a major complaint for me tonight. Was it just me or were there a lot more commercials then usual tonight? Absolutely loved that they got the score from the first movie though. I was surprised to see that no one from the Justice League made an appearance. I was equally surprised with the absence of Lana Lang and Pete Ross. Couldn't they at least have put with Lex Luthor in the final scene when he is about to take the podium? I liked that they had "Jimmy Olsen's brother" show up though.
Where do we go from here? The box set that is coming out later this year looks like it will be a must buy. I really hope that is the actual cover art because that looks pretty awesome. I would have loved to see the next set of Superman movies be done with this cast. Tom Welling as Superman, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor and Erica Durance as Lois Lane. It will be hard to picture anyone else in those roles for a while because I think all three were fantastic. Do we get a spin off? I think a Justice League or Green Arrow show has potential. Could we get the occasional cameo from the Smallville characters there?

I agree with you on a lot of things here. Not having the League in it was a huge pet peeve for me tonight. How can they put all that effort into building up the League and getting them their right to be in existence, and mention them as a whole in the final minutes of the episode and not even include them? Alexander was clearly poised to be "Superboy" but no just another empty plot hole. Then the commercials...clearly they were more interested in craming as many commercials in the two hours as they could get away with. They charge incredible amounts of money for series finalè commercials. My biggest pet peeve of the night had to have been the complete absence of any kind of epic battle. We've been waiting for the great and powerful Darkside to come and that's all we get? Not only that but every conflict in the show was over three seconds after it started. The epic return of Lex Luther, how long have we been waiting for that just to have a little dialog consisting of nothing we haven't heard before. I have watched every episode for ten years now and this I must way was a disappointing end. Not enough character closure for me. Yes they did a good job at transitioning him into Superman I'll give them that. I'm now going to go read some Superman comics to get some character closure. P.S. I woah they would've added young Bruce Wayne into the story line more than just that one episode all those years ago. That would've been great.
ReplyDeleteWhen did they ever use Bruce Wayne?
