Fox makes "mistake" & can't place Egypt on a map

Geography fail. 
Yet another Fox "mistake." Seeing this float around on twitter. Hey Fox, why didn't you try squeezing North Korea, Iraq and Afghanistan into that picture as well so you could spread more fear and ignorance.

UPDATE: Just saw a tweet from my brother that this picture is from 2009. It is still pretty stupid though.

VIDEO: Terror threat at Detroit area Mosque

Why hasn't the national media picked up this story yet?
On Monday, Dearborn Police arrested a California man on suspicion of attempting a terrorist act at the Islamic Center of America. 63 year old Roger Stockham was found in the Mosque's parking lot with explosive materials.

Space Shuttle Challenger

At roughly this moment 25 years ago Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after liftoff killing all 7 on board. It was the first time NASA has suffered casualties during an actual flight. The 3 deaths on board what was later dubbed Apollo 1 happened as part of a training mission. Space Shuttle Columbia exploded in 2003. All 3 missions are remembered by NASA each January

Barack Obama released a statement this week honoring the men and women who have lost their lives on NASA missions. 


We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye, and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."
That afternoon President Reagan addressed the nation from the Oval Office. The State of the Union was scheduled for that night but wasn't delivered. Reagan mentions in this video that he changed his mind and decided to not deliver it that night but a NBC news clip embedded below says congressmen told them they were not interested in politics that day. I really want to read up more on this. 

The Shuttle fleet will be retired later this year. As I have mentioned in the past, I am a big suppoter of manned space flights

As I have also mentioned in the past, I almost got to see a shuttle launch from very close to Cape Canveral. I was in Florida (in Orlando to be exact) in the week leading up to the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing and was not able to attend any of the festivities at Cape Canaveral. Even the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour that I went to see ended up being called off 5 minutes before launch time. That wasn't even the worst of it, the 40 minute drive back to Orlando took us 4 hours because of the traffic backup exiting from the vicinity of Cape Canaveral. I did mange to catch the launch of the Shuttle from the airport. A huge crowd gathered at the airport gate as we all looked out the window and saw the orange glow shooting towards the sky. It was an amazing site watching all the planes grounded on the runway as they waited for the shuttle to clear their airspace

Michelle Bachmann delivered this speech live on a Tea Party website and CNN. Why did CNN give this crazy woman airtime tonight? Heck, even Fox didn't air it live. According to the Baltimore Sun Fox did air it live on their website. Watch it.

2010 NFL Conference Championship Predictions

I came back down to earth last week with a 2-2 record but I still hold a very respectable 6-2 record for the playoffs.

Collectively we had an average week at best.

Here are the lines we will be using this week. 

Packers (-4) over the Bears
Jets (+3.5) over the Steelers

I am a big fan of old school rivalries. The Bears have had a great run but it ends this week. The Packers will win and cover. I just don't think Julius Peppers and Brian Urlacher will be able to make the Packers miserable enough. Hats off to Aaron Rodgers, he truly has taken that step into the top tier of NFL Quaterbacks. What a performance it was from the Packers last week against a very good Falcons team. I was watching "Sound FX" on NFL network this week and it showed that Mike Smith wanted to go for a Field Goal at the of the first half on the play that resulted in the pick 6 going the other way. He changed his mind after consulting with the offensive coordinator. That play ended up being the final nail in the coffin. The game time temperature is expected to be 18 degrees! It would have been better if there was also snow in the forecast. Don't expect weather to be a problem for Aaron Rodgers.
In his career, including playoffs, Rodgers is 7-3 in games when the temperature is 30 degrees or below, according to ESPN Stats and Information. In those ten contests, Rodgers has 25 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, with a passer rating of 109.4. 
Barack Obama made some news this week by announcing his plans for Super Bowl Sunday.
"Oh, if the Bears are in the Super Bowl, we're going." 
He would be the first President to attend but like I have mentioned before, I don't have a problem with his trips to sporting events because he is a legitimate fan

In case you haven't heard, the New York Jets "CAN'T WAIT!" for this Sunday. Actually words don't do it justice. I'll let Bart Scott explain it better. 


As I mentioned last week, people just aren't giving this Jets team any credit. This team did go 11-5 right? This team did just beat Peyton Manning and Tom Brady the last two weeks, correct? The Jets did just become the first team in NFL history to win 2 road games in the playoffs in back to back years, correct? Their 2nd year Head Coach/Quarterback are 4-1 in their short playoff careers, correct? Once again I am going with the New York Jets to win outright. Not to turn this into a lecture of some sort but what more does this team need to do? I have had people tell me this week that Mark Sanchez will have his "deer in the headlights" moment this week. People do realize that he did play in the AFC Championship game last year right? Don't get me wrong, the Steelers are a very good team and I wouldn't be shocked to see them win but I just think the Jets are Super Bowl bound this year. It really has been one of those years for them. Earlier this year they became the first team in NFL history to win back to back road games in overtime. There have been people downplaying the Jets win in Pittsburgh earlier this season because Troy Polamalu missed that game. In the words of the ESPN's NFL Countdown crew, "C'mon Man!"

Speaking of ESPN, have you guys been following the Tom Jackson debacle this week?

After a relatively quiet week the Jets have been calling out Hines Ward for his dirty play the last couple of days. ESPN New York notes that the two playoff wins so far this year are worth an extra $500,000 to Mark Sanchez. Rex Ryan is just the 5th coach in the Super Bowl era to make it to the Conference Championship game in his first two years. I'm hoping Tomlinson gets his first shot at a Super Bowl ring.

Keith Olbermann out at MSNBC

In a move I guess we should have seen coming MSNBC terminated the contract of Keith Olbermann today. In his final segment tonight he announced that this was the last edition of Countdown. I have been a big fan of Olbermann's work with MSNBC over the years. He was the one man on cable news trying to keep the previous administration honest while everyone else was willing to just stand there and look the other way. His segments about "Terror Alerts" were fantastic and showed a pattern of politically motivated fear tactics.

MSNBC did release a statement.
"MSNBC and Keith Olbermann have ended their contract. The last broadcast of "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" will be this evening. MSNBC thanks Keith for his integral role in MSNBC's success and we wish him well in his future endeavors."

He thanked a bunch of people at the end but MSNBC President Phil Griffin was a notable absence in that list. Of course there will be plenty of speculation that this is directly related to the Comcast NBC merger. For what its worth Comcast last year had said that they were committed to letting "Keith Olbermann be Keith Olbermann."

NBC announced its new schedule via a press release.

Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo was a guest on the show tonight and was shocked about the termination.

The Olbermann exit comes exactly one year since Air America shut down.

Where does Olbermann go next? Will he end up at CNN and replace Parker/Spitzer? I don't have any loyalty towards Ed Schultz or Lawrence O'Donnell at this time. CNN would be stupid not to try and land him at this point right?

I will follow Olbermann wherever it is that he ends up but for now I will continue to follow him on twitter. I'll post some more thoughts on this in the coming days as more news become public.

50th anniversary of JFK Inauguration

At this hour 50 years ago JFK delivered his Inaugural Address.
And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country. 

That is the line we have all heard over and over again that gets quoted from this speech but there are other quotable lines as well.
Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans--born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage--and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.
JFK was the first President born in the 20th century. His youthful persona helped him reach out to the younger generation and deliver a call to action.
Let both sides, for the first time, formulate serious and precise proposals for the inspection and control of arms--and bring the absolute power to destroy other nations under the absolute control of all nations.

The START Treaty was in the news not too long ago so I though this passage was relevant even today.
So let us begin anew--remembering on both sides that civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof. Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate. 
His words to the Soviet Union would fit well today if they were targeted to both parties in congress.

2010 NFL Divisional Round Predictions

Great week for me last going 4-0 as the Seahawks not only covered but they won outright. Had I stuck with my gut feeling I would have gone 4-0 in picking the winners too. Lesson learned for this week hopefully. Feel free to post your picks even if you didn't take part last week.

Sorry for putting these up so late. I will just rush through the picks this week.

Ravens (+3) over the Steelers
Packers (+3) over the Falcons
Seahawks (+10) over the Bears
Jets (+9) over the Patriots

I am taking the Ravens to beat the Steelers outright. This has been a really heated rivalry in recent years and Hines Ward's hit on Ed Reed certainly didn't help to calm things down. Speaking of Ed Reed, there is still no update on his missing brother.

It was great to see Aaron Rodgers get a playoff win under his belt  last week after yet another NFL season that was dominated by Brett Favre headlines. Two of the best young Quarterbacks in the league going head to head here and I am really looking forward to this one. I felt going into last week that their defense would do the job against the speedy Eagles. I am taking the Packers to win outright on the road for the 2nd straight week.

Bears/Seahawks is a tricky one for me. The Seahawks will definitely cover and I wouldn't be surprised to see them pull off the win here. I just don't think the Bears are that good. Whoever wins here loses next year to the winner of the Packers/Falcons game. Looks like I didn't learn my lesson from last week because gut feeling says that Seattle wins.

I am really looking forward to the Jets/Patriots. Call me crazy but I think the Jets win this one. Yes, the Patriots did win their last meeting in a really lopsided game but this Jets team had one hell of a year. For whatever reason this team never gets any credit. Rex Ryan has called this the 2nd biggest game in franchise history. I'll have to read into it a little bit more but this is an important game for the team. A win here would go a long way towards silencing critics here at home. Last time these two teams met in Foxboro, Tom Brady threw 2 interceptions in a 28-14 Jets win. A 9 point line is absolutely ridiculous here. I am taking the Jets to win outright and go to the Conference Championship game for the second straight yet.

2010 NFL Wildcard Round Predictions

Through the NFL Playoffs I will be picking the games against the spread. Just for continuity I will be using the bodog.com lines from ESPN. I'm looking for some challengers. If you want to put your picks on the record just post them here or send it to me via Twitter or e-mail. When you submit your picks feel free to send me a link to your Twitter feed, blog, Tumblr, etc. and I'll link to it here. I'll keep standings for picks against the spread but feel free to post your picks for winners if the two are different.


Here are my picks, please use the same line to make your picks.


Seahawks +10.5 over Saints
Jets +3 over Colts
Ravens -3 over Chiefs
Packers +2.5 over Eagles


Yes, I am well aware of how bad the NFC West was this year but 11 is a really crazy number for a playoff line. Saints will pull off the win but the game will be a lot closer then people think.


I am taking the Jets to win outright over the Colts. The Jets are better then people give them credit for. This team did 11 games this year but if you looked around people almost act as though they were 8-8. I love Rex Ryan. People used to rip into Eric Mangini in New York because he had no personality but a lot of those same people are now opposed to Rex Ryan because he is the exact opposite of Mangini. How does that work? I try to stay away from picking against Peyton Manning but his defense will let him down here. The Jets have a very good running game and I think Mark Sanchez will flourish in the Dome too. Plus there is that little business of payback for last year.


I'll take the Ravens to win easily. They are giving 3 points here but honestly I don't think this game will be close. I give a lot of credit to Todd Haley. He has done a very good in Kansas City but he's just running into a better team here. I think Ray Rice (286 all purpose yards in 2 career playoff starts) will have a big playoff run and take that step into the top tier of HBs.


The biggest win of Michael Vick's career came at Lambeau Field as a member of the Falcons. He's had a fantastic year and I for one am glad to see him come back strong. Heck, he even has Barack Obama in his corner. There are a lot of people who are are still vocal opponents of Vick being back in the NFL but it is hard to argue that NFL fans want him there when he had the 5th best selling jersey in the NFL this year. Vick really is the wildcard here. He could just put on one great show in front of a national audience and win the game by himself and no one really would be surprised. I think it is not that big of a stretch to say that he is the best player in the league right now. That being said, I am taking the Packers to win here. I think Clay Matthews and the Packers defense will contain him. Lets not forget that they have a pretty good quarterback themselves and with all of the Brett Favre drama this year it will be great to see Rodgers have a good game here in the playoffs.

Eric LeGrand ESPN Interview

This morning ESPN aired an interview that Tom Rinaldi conducted with Rutgers Defensive Tackle Eric LeGrand. Tom Rinaldi does a great job with pieces like this and the LeGrand interview is no different. I haven't seen the TV version yet so I don't know if this is the whole thing but here is a clip ESPN has posted online.

He injured his vertebrae earlier this season in a game against Army. Since then the Rutgers and sports communities have come together to help raise money for him and his money as they face years of medical bills.


On October 22nd Rutgers sent out a press release announcing the creation of the "Eric LeGrand Believe Fund."
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 22, 2010) – Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti announced today the establishment of the “Eric LeGrand Believe Fund” to support Eric LeGrand (Avenel, N.J.) and his family. LeGrand, a junior defensive tackle for the Scarlet Knights, suffered a spinal cord injury Oct. 16 vs. Army.

Prior to the Rutgers/Pitt game this season there was a "Moment of Cheer" at Heinz Field.

Rutgers Football has a TV show that airs on SNY and inside the stadium. They did this story on LeGrand earlier this season.





The family has already received financial assistance from the $75,000 from Devin Harris and the New Jersey Nets, $20,000 from Tracy McGradyT-shirt sales from Scarlet Fever, a store near campus, raised $90,000. Wristband sales on campus, a student-organized effort, raised another $65,000. Those figures are from a local newspaper article (the article also mentions smaller donations from schools in the area) that also quotes the owner of the store. 
When the line formed on the sidewalk outside the store, when the internet orders alone topped 2,000, he knew he had to print more — and fast. Ostergren wrote a check to the Eric LeGrand Believe Fund for about $89,500 recently.
“We’re still selling shirts,” he said, “and we’ll keep selling shirts as long as people want them.”
Erica Bowden, a junior from South Plainfield, decided to sell wristbands with the message “Eric LeGrand #52 Believe.” She thought it was a risk to order 200. The current tally, her father, Bill, said, was close to 19,000.

Ted Williams: From Homeless to being a National Star

Over the last day or so you probably have heard a lot of people talking about Ted Williams. No, they are not talking about that Ted Williams. His decapitated body remains frozen in Arizona as far as we know.

Ted Williams is a 53 year old homeless man currently living on the streets of Columbus, Ohio. The world now knows him as the "Man with the Golden Voice" courtesy of a story first reported by the Columbus Dispatch.

Williams who is originally from Brooklyn, New York was a radio personality in the 1990s.

He is now getting recognition nation wide. Just how in demand is he? Just ask Kevin McLoughlin who is a spokesman for the NFL,
"My boss said to me: 'If you don't get him hired, you're fired,'"
MSNBC has hired him to do some promotional work for them and those promos will start airing tonight. The Cleveland Cavaliers were among the first to offer him a job. According to the Associated Press they offered him a two year deal plus living expenses. The same article mentions that he has an offer from NFL Films as well.

He has been making the rounds on the TV circuit. He reunited with his mother on the Today Show after 20 years.  



He has been all over the TV in the last day or so.

Some conservatives have been up in arms the last couple of days because Barack Obama was spotted wearing flip flops....while in Hawaii......on vacation. How dare he! Surely that is offense worthy of impeachment. right?

ESPN will air interview with Eric LeGrand

Back in October I posted a couple of entries on Rutgers DT Eric LeGrand. If you are not familiar with the story he received a spinal cord injury in a game against Army earlier this season. Doctors at the time didn't think he'd regain movement below the neck. Turns out he is making a lot of progress. Tomorrow morning starting in the 9 AM hour SportsCenter will be airing an interview with him that Tom Rinaldi did. 


Rutgers Athletics Department sent out the following Press Release earlier today. 



Eric LeGrand
ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi conducted the first interview with Rutgers defensive lineman Eric LeGrand since he was paralyzed in a collision during a game against Army on Oct. 16. In the interview, scheduled to debut on ESPN on Friday, Jan. 7 during the 9 a.m. edition of SportsCenter, LeGrand told Rinaldi that he has full sensation in his entire body and movement in his shoulders. Rinaldi spoke to LeGrand at the Kessler Institute in West Orange, N.J., where he is in rehabilitation.
In the feature, LeGrand said while lying on the field at the New Meadowlands, he had “the fear of death” and that he “could pass out and die here.” He added he couldn’t do “a thumbs up” motion while on the stretcher when he was removed from the field because it felt like “1,000 pounds was on this thumb” when he tried to move it.
Doctors initially believed that he would not regain any feeling or movement below the neck, but LeGrand has exceeded their expectations. His paralysis has been diagnosed as incomplete and he has been able to breathe on his own without the use of a ventilator since late November.
Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said about LeGrand, “He believes that he’s going to be up and moving again. There’s no doubt in his mind.”

This little kid knows her Presidents

I was watching "Nightly News with Brian Williams" last night and they showed this very impressive little girl who knows her Presidents. She received one of those neat little posters from her father who is supposedly a history buff and can identify Presidents by their pictures as well as quotes like "I'm not a crook."
