Politico with a dumb attack on Obama

Source: Obama says his 12-year-old is 13 | POLITICO 44

This is the stupidest columns I've read all week (and I've spent way too much time on Foxnews.com this week). Just how desperate is MJ Lee of Politico for attention? Trying to make it sound like Obama doesn't know how old his daughters are when her birthday is under a week away. Are we all supposed to give months, wake and days along with years when we tell someone our age?

Just how slow of a news days was this? I'm seeing this as the cover story on Yahoo as well. The story is from the Associated Press. Absolutely idiotic.

Winnipeg team expected to announce 'Jets' name before pick

Winnipeg team expected to announce 'Jets' name before pick

I had no doubt that the team would end up being called the Jets but it is good to see common sense prevail. Calling the team anything else would have been a terrible marketing failure on behalf of the NHL.

I'm looking to the NHL Draft. It will be the first time in a very long time that I will be sitting down to watch it from the start. I was disappointed with the awards show the other night. Hopefully the draft doesn't disappoint.

This Is SportsCenter: Abby Wambach

ESPN has produced some great commercials over the years as part of their "This is SportsCenter" series. The newest one starring US Womens National Team star Abby Wambach is no different.

Jim Riggleman resigns as Nationals manager

Like everyone else I am pretty surprised to hear that Jim Riggleman has resigned as manager of the Washington Nationals despite the team having a 38-37 record.

The Nationals are above .500 this late in a season for the first time since 2005. Riggleman will end up getting a bad rap here for quitting on the team but the Nationals are pretty stupid for not having picked up the option already. What is the point of having a lame duck manager? Its not like he was asking for a 3 year extension today. He's been talking to the team for an extension for a while. I was just listening to him on Mike Francesa's show and he said all he asked for was a conversation about an extension this weekend when they got to Chicago. He was told the team didn't want to have a conversation. Yes, Riggleman's overall record as a manager isn't very good but again I can't blame here. No coach or manager should go into a year as a lame duck.

Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post had the best statement I've read so far about the resignation.
In the spirit of Marlins bringing back Jack McKeon, Nats should bring back Frank Robinson -- NL east old-school!
Who do the Nationals get? Surely it is an appealing job for some big name candidates. Does Bobby Valentine make the jump from the booth?

Landon Donovan's World Cup goal

One year ago today Landon Donovan scored arguably the most famous soccer goal in American history.

I don't even know if I should put "arguably" because I really can't think of another goal that had a bigger impact on American soccer fans. I was sitting in the waiting room at St. Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ and it was cool to see doctors, nurses and other hospital staff filling the waiting room in the final minutes of the game against Algeria. When Donovan scored the place got pretty loud, well louder then it should have gotten in a hospital but it was one of those moments. I wrote about American soccer in detail at the time.

Bart Scott’s “Can’t Wait” clothing line to benefit paralyzed player | ProFootballTalk

Bart Scott’s “Can’t Wait” clothing line to benefit paralyzed player | ProFootballTalk

Bart Scott's "Can't Wait" interview with ESPN spread like wildfire on YouTube earlier this year. The Jets star later applied for a trademark on the phrase. Now he is putting that phrase to good use.

Bart Scott has announced a clothing line, proceeds from which will benefit Eric LeGrand of Rutgers. The Jets take a lot of unnecessary criticism from people around the NFL so it is definitely nice to see one of their guys get recognition for some good work.  If you aren't familiar with LeGrand, he was paralyzed last year in a game against Army. Rutgers launched the "Eric LeGrand Believe Fund" in order to help the family with the medical bills.

Rutgers reaches stadium naming rights deal - ESPN

Rutgers reaches stadium naming rights deal - Big East Blog - ESPN

Rutgers Stadium will now be known as High Point Solutions Stadium. I am somewhat surprised that Rutgers is only the 10th Football Bowl Subdivision school to sell their stadium naming rights. There are five other teams who share a stadium with an NFL team.
While it sucks as a traditionalist this is the new reality in sports. As a season ticket holder I loved the new expansion to the stadium and obviously ticket sales alone weren't going to pay for that.

Countdown with Keith Olbermann

Keith Olbermann is back on TV!

Olbermann's new show (with the old name) "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" premiers tonight on Current TV at 8 PM Eastern. There will also be a repeat at 11 PM Eastern. They need to something about the programming on Current TV. Olbermann's lead in tonight were a couple of shows on marijuana. I kid you not. Why not give David Shuster a show who they have already hired as Olbermann's substitute host?

Current TV can be found on Channel 358 on DirecTV. On Dish Network it is channel 196. As I find more I'll try to edit in this post. Let me know if you have the channel and where it can be found on your cable provider. You can check to see if your cable provider has it by going to the show's website.

Current TV needs to get the show available in HD on all outlets.

McIlroy wins US Open

Just a quick follow up to my post earlier in the day. Just wanted to take a moment and just say....WOW!

I don't know if there is a better way to describe what we witnessed this week. He played about as perfect as anyone can play four round of golf. I can't help but think that part of his success this week was his visit to Haiti last week as a representative of UNICEF. Did it help him to further put his 80 in perspective knowing how blessed he had been already in his career?  He hit 62 out of 72 (86.11%) greens in regulation and when he didn't he pretty much always drained the long par putts. How many times this weekend did it seem like he hit the big putt? It really is scary because he had his share of misses.

I absolutely loved the way the crowd got behind him. There is no doubt in mind that him handling the disaster at The Masters so well earned him a ton of fans this weekend. The chants of "Lets go Rory!" were amazing. I have watched a lot of golf over the past 16 years but this was just something else. I don't think even the gallery support for Phil Mickelson when he finally won a major was as great as the support McIlroy received this week.

Hopefully this is the start of many more major titles for him. While it may be unfair to tag him as the man who will eventually break Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors, his success in his young career so far will only make those comments more frequent. Will he start to play more on the PGA Tour? How much pressure is there on the Tim Finchem and the PGA guys in the coming weeks to get him to play on the tour since Tiger is on the downside of his career and Mickelson isn't getting any younger. As of right now McIlroy is only scheduled to play two more tournaments in the US and that would just be a shame.

The Golf Channel actually showed footage earlier of him taking that picture.

By the way, what was Shane McMahon doing next to McIlroy's father?

Oakley Hounded Men's Polo Fashion Shirt - Blue Violet / MediumTiger Woods PGA TOUR 12: The Masters

Rory McIlroy

The countdown is on for the coronation of Rory McIlroy. NBC goes on the air at 1:30 PM Eastern but McIlroy won't tee off until 3:20 PM. There is rain in the forecast but hopefully it stays away.

I didn't get to watch his round live yesterday but caught up late night courtesy of the DVR. There is no way McIlroy blows this. This is not the same situation as the Masters. Yes, he had a four shot lead going into the final round there but that lead was gone by the time he was on the 2nd hole because Charl Schwartzel was shooting lights out. The lead is just too big here. He showed yesterday (I believe it was the 3rd hoel) that he would play it safe when need be when he just chipped out to the fairway.

There is already talk of him being the one to potentially chase down Jack Nicklaus' record of 18 majors. Padraig Harrington mentioned it this week too and McIlroy was asked about it yesterday. McIlroy's response?
"Oh, Paddy, Paddy, Paddy,I'm still looking for my first one. That's all I can say. I'm looking for my first one. I've put myself in a great position to do that (Sunday), and then we'll see what happens from there."
He said all the right things including  but if there is a guy on the tour today who will chase down the record (or come close) it will be McIlroy. Yes, everyone talks about him shooting 80 but lets not forget that coming into this US Open he had played in eight majors and already had three 3rd place finishes. In those eight majors he has four top 10 finishes and 6 top 20. Keep in mind that he is just 22.

I absolutely loved the "Lets go Rory" chants yesterday. To me his is the anti-Tiger which is one of the biggest reasons so many (including me) have become big fans in such a short time span. The way he handled his letdown at The Masters can only be described as classy. Even in the aftermath of the disaster at Augusta I thought he would return to greatness. He is great with the media and even better with the fans. By the way make sure you follow Rory McIlroy on Twitter.

I know we've been here before. Sergio Garcia was hyped up as a potential Tiger rival (and the thought wasn't crazy at the time) but I don't think Garcia ever had the mental makeup for it which is a shame because I absolutely loved watching him play.

By the way, Oakley which sponsors (and dresses) McIlroy is busy selling shirts that he is wearing here at the US Open although like pretty much everything else they are available for cheaper on Amazon.

Obama to personally tweet from Twitter account - Yahoo! News

Obama to personally tweet from Twitter account - Yahoo! News

Barack Obama will start posting updates himself on the @barackobama twitter feed. My response to that is, what took so long?

Back in April of 2009 I was quoted about the Obama twitter feed by Christina Bellantoni (who was with the Washington Times at the time). I said at the time that the Obama White House should have been using social media more to vouch for their agenda. The White House has done a good job embracing technology with putting up video of the weekly addresses as well as the Flickr feeds but they have not used Facebook and Twitter like they could have. Yes, his staff has made their presence felt on twitter but I have thought for a while that Obama should have been chiming in from time to time.

John Isner draws Nicolas Mahut in Wimby marathon rematch - ESPN

I honestly don't care if the fix was in to get this match up for the first round, I like it. Heck, put them on center court as I'm sure they will be a draw. Hopefully the match can deliver.
