A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post titled "Americans don't care about soccer." I received a lot feedback via twitter and e-mail addressing both sides of the issue. With the World Cup now being over I just want to add a little more to that post. If you missed that post the first time around check it out and let me know what you think.
Once the US Mens National Team was eliminated a lot of the casual fans and pretty much everyone who hates soccer figured that Americans would stop watching. They figured Americans were along for the ride as long they had their team there. It turns out that wasn't remotely close to what actually happened. The World Cup final yesterday between Spain and Netherlands actually drew a large audience here in the US. Early numbers show that 24.3 million people watched the game on game on ABC and Univision. That easily makes it the most watched soccer game in American history comfortably beating the US/Ghana match up from this World Cup, the 1994 US/Brazil match and the 1999 Womens World Cup final the US and China. Not bad for a nation "that stopped caring after the US was eliminated". Really fired up for 2014 and if the US lands 2018. Soccer on TV during the evening and nights will help even more.
Lets not forget that the 2014 World Cup is in Brazil and with those games being aired during the evening and night here in the US ratings show climb even higher. The 2018 World Cup could very well end up in the US so the opportunity to further grow the sport here in the US with prime time TV exposure is right there.
I'm having World Cup withdrawals already. By the way, will the Vuvuzela crazy live or die?
