NFL Divisional Round Predictions

The Divisional Round of the playoffs are here. So I went 2-2 overall last week. That is versus the spread and straight up picking winners too. Hopefully a better week is in store. I picked the Ravens and Jets correctly last week while the Eagles and the Packers let me down.

I am going to take the Saints -7 vs Cardinals. I think the Birthday Boy (ok...so what if Brees' Birthday was actually yesterday) will outshine Kurt Warner and send him into retirement. Saints will not only win but cover the spread comfortably taking this one 35-20.

I jumped all over the Colts for their decision to spit on history. I am a big Colts supporter and a big Peyton Manning supporter but that decision will come back to haunt the Colts today. The only way their decision gets justified is with a Super Bowl win and as much as I would like that today will be Ray Rice's day. Sure the Colts shut him down (relatively speaking) the last time they played but this is a man on a mission. This man can very well be the #1 pick overall in a lot of Fantasy Football leagues next year. I am going to take the Ravens (+6.5) outright in this one.

So the Cowboys finally win a playoff game and the trash talking Cowboys fans have all returned (not that they ever really left). Relax folks. This team has still only won one playoff game since I was in 7th grade! Coming off the high of last week I believe they'll fall flat this week. I expect to see a big game from Adrian Peterson to carry the Viking (-3) over the Cowboys and into the NFC Championship game.

The Jets/Chargers game is actually quiet interesting to me. Next to the Ravens/Colts this is the game I am most looking forward too. On paper you would think the Chargers should win this one big and the line at 9 points definitely reflects that but I don't think it is that simple. The Jets have a rookie QB and a rookie head coach. There is just no way they can win two playoff games this year....is it? Can they really be in a position to host the AFC Championship Game next Sunday? We have seen this Chargers team lose a lot of big games over the years. Revis got robbed this week, he definitely should have been the "Defensive Player of the Year" and I think he proves it on Sunday. I am expecting big games from Thomas Jones and Shonn Greene. I think the Jets (+9) pull off a huge upset here.

Who are you picking? Post your picks or send them to me.

TMZ: Leno gets hour long "Tonight Show"

According to TMZ, Leno and NBC have struck a new deal. Guess this means I won't be turning on NBC at 11:30. What a dumb move. Can't believe NBC failed this miserably with the situation. Way to make a mockery of one of the greatest franchises in TV history. Way to pick the less funny guy for a 2nd time. What a disaster.
NBC will at best be the 4th option at 11:30 for me. Conan, Colbert and Letterman are all miles ahead. I'm not even counting the fact that if those guys are having off nights....I'll put on ESPN instead. So....good riddance NBC.
P.S Can someone pass a memo to NBC saying that "Late Night" is supposed to be funny. Could they possibly pick two more more boring guys then Leno and Fallon?

APNewsBreak: McGwire Admits Using Steroids

File this one under "Duh!" or "Obvious". Mark McGwire has admitted to steroids use. Something that some people have suspected for around two decades with him. None the less you knew this was coming once the St. Louis Cardinals hired him as a hitting coach.

Now, just think how much different his legacy would have been if he had chosen "to speak about the past" back when it mattered.

I will say once again though that I am surprised that more names haven't been released tied to steroids. I wrote about it at length during the playoffs.

I will take the Jets outright. I'll take the Eagles. I think this game comes down to a late FG. For tomorrow I am taking the Ravens with them winning outright. To wrap it up I will take the Packers.  Yes, I really do think all 4 road teams win.

I'll throw out my predictions for the rest of the playoffs too. Lets see how that works out.

Divisional Round

Ravens over Colts
Chargers over the Jets
Saints over Eagles
Packers over Vikings

Conference Championship
Chargers over Ravens

Another disgrace for Pakistani Cricket

What a difference a day makes. This time last night me and Tens of millions of Pakistani Cricket fans were feeling great. We were finally on the verge of a long awaited win versus Australia. That all changed with the first hour of play today. Absolute disaster.

There is plenty of blame to go around but two people deserve the most of it.

The Captain Mohammad Yousuf needs to be held accountable for this disgrace. His disastrous decisions in the first hour of today brought Australia back into the game. Pakistan could not have entered the days play in a stronger position if they had written the script themselves but for some reason he comes out and plays as defensively as you possibly can. Just what was going through his mind at that time? What is he doing telling Umar Akmalto play defensively? Umar has been our most reliable and consistent player since he came into the team. Why would you make him change his style of play when he's had success playing the way he plays? Furthermore how can you justify that decision when your own shot selection is pathetic? I really want to root for him because he comes across as a nice guy in interviews (there are reports of him helping create a faction on the team that ousted previous captain) for the most part but he is absolutely clueless on the playing field. He's compiled a ton of runs over the years but never delivers when the team truly needs him. It just never happens. When was the last time he put his foot down and carried us to a win? What is his signature moment?

The Vice Captain Kamran Akmal is equally responsible. How many catches does he have to drop for him to be dropped from the team? How many missed stumpings? Run Outs? His bat is not a viable excuse. He simply does not score enough runs to justify a spot in the lineup because he gives up just as many runs because of all his dropped catches. The Pakistani Bowlers repeatedly have to get 4 or 5 extra outs and Kamran Akmal is a big reason why. How can anyone in charge justify the decision to keep him in the team let alone to make him Vice Captain? Give Sarfraz Ahmed a shot now!

If we never see Mohammad Yousuf or Kamran Akmal in the Pakistani team ever again....it would still be too soon.

Do we really need Inzi 2.0 as Captain? Can we please change captains now? Bring back Younis Khan. Bring in Shahid Afridi. Anyone who doesn't want to play for Younis Khan can go home. Good riddance. I've stayed up until 2 AM every night watching this team play and this was just a disgrace

Cory Booker is awesome

Have I ever mentioned that Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey is awesome? Yes, I believe I have.

For those who are not familiar with him, you should read up on the man. He's definitely a rising star in the Democratic Party. He will be either the next Governor from NJ or the next Senator. One way or the other you will be hearing a lot of him if you haven't already. He is without a doubt one of the finest mayors in the country. He turned down a job in the Obama White House. He has been a big part of the major transformation the the "Brick City" has taken over the past few years. He goes out on night patrol in the community with the Newark Police Department and personally sees to it that there is positive change in his Newark.

This New Year's Day he once again proved why he is not like any other politician. He went out and shoveled snow for the elderly. Is it a nice political photo-op? Sure, it could be. But honestly I hadn't seen it in any news up until I saw this CNN article. Once again a job well done Mr. Mayor. If you haven't been following the Mayor on twitter, do so now?

From Y2K to 2010....A Decade of Madness

Wow, it is 2010 already? Where has the time gone? Wasn't it just yesterday that the world was in chaos over Y2K and impending doom as a result of evil computers? Where has the time gone?

This decade we went from chaos over Y2K to a completely digital decade. Tonight we all sent people text messages wishing them a "Happy New Year", a decade ago text messaging did not exist and most people did not have a cellphone. Highspeed internet available to the masses wasn't yet a dream realized. People still got their news from actual newspapers (I kid!). If someone had mentioned the concept of Youtube, Facebook or Twitter to us at the time we probably would have laughed in their faces.

In 2000 I was a freshman in High School. In 2000 I lived in Toronto, Canada and not Piscataway, NJ. In 2000 the Boston Red Sox were still cursed and we were sick and tired of the New York Yankees (some things just don't change!). Ten years ago Kobe and Shaq were taking over the NBA. In 2000 the New York Knicks won 50 games. In 2000 "NBA on NBC" was entertaining us every Sunday. In 2000 Ken Griffey was well on his way to being the greatest baseball player whoever lived. In 2000 no one had heard of Tom Brady. In 2000 the St. Louis Rams were on top of the NFL. In 2000 people actually liked Brett Favre. In 2000 MMA was just a bunch of thugs and nowhere mainstream.

In 2000 Gladiator was the number 1 movie winning the "Best Picture" Oscar. Russel Crowe and Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich) also won Oscars. Pokemon was a major fad (I fell asleep at the theaters while taking younger cousins to go see whatever Pokemon movie was out that year). Eminem, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera were dominating the charts. American Idol, 24, Lost, Heroes, Mad Men, Survivor and NCIS didn't yet exist.

In 2000 the United States was about to elect George W. Bush as President. In 2000 Joe Lieberman was a Vice President nominee and not the punchline to a joke.  In 2000 if you had told me that an African American would be President by the end of the decade I would have laughed at you. In 2000 Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck were insane (ok...so maybe things haven't changed much there). In 2000 Jon Stewart was still a relatively new host of "The Daily Show" and not a major force in the world of politics. In 2000 the three network news anchors were Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather.

What will the next decade bring? Any predictions? Who would've predicted the major force Twitter, Facebook, blogs and pretty much anything digital would become. By the way what are you calling this year? "Twenty Ten" or "Two Thousand Ten"?

Pakistan Test Cricket

Here we are yet again. Another test match and another tough Pakistan loss. The day started with much optimism. Pakistan needed 252 to win on the final day (in no way an easy task) and had 7 wickets in hand. I didn't make it home until the 6th bowl of the first over and by that time this match was already over.

What is it about batting 4th that just scares this team? Pakistan hasn't won a match batting in the 4th inning since January 2007. If you look for matches where Pakistan had to chase over 200 in the 4th inning that streak runs over 6 years. Yes, I understand that Pakistan hasn't played much Test cricket in that time frame but that stretch is still way too long.

As is always the case with Pakistan cricket the team selection continues to be mind boggling at best. How is it that Faisal Iqbal keeps finding a spot in the team when far more talented players like Asim Kamal, Yasir Hameed and Taufeeq Umar haven't been able to find a spot in the team in years? There has to be more to it then him being Javed Miandad's nephew. Right? Right? Will the PCB ever give Fawad Alam a fair shot in the team or will he get discarded like many talented young players before him?

When will the PCB realize that playing Shahid Afridi in tests is a gamble worth taking? Why do people continue to ignore that he has a test average of 37.40? His last test was in 2006. He has had gotten better recently so that number has the potential to get better. What makes him even more of a test player now is his bowling. He has been on a roll recently and a spot in the test team will be a challenge he will handle well.

I would like to see Pakistan give Sarfaraz Ahmed a shot at keeper too. Yes, Kamran has had a decent run with the bat the last couple of years but his wicketkeeping still leave a lot to be desired. I think it is about time we give the kid a shot. Who knows, maybe a little competition will push Kamran Akmal. Moin Khan and Rashid Latif always seemed to do it to each other in the 90s.

What should the Pakistani test team look like?

1)Imran Farhat
2)Salman Butt
3)Younis Khan
4)Mohammad Yousuf
5)Umar Akmal
6)Shahid Afridi
7)Kamran Akmal
8)Mohammad Aamer
9)Umar Gul
10)Mohammad Asif
11)Danesh Kaneria/Saeed Ajmal

They could always decide to play Afridi as the only spinner and add a bowler or batsman accordingly. Who do you guy guys want to see be in the squad? Clearly there is still work to be done.

Barack Obama definitely has a sense of humor. The Governor of Virginia Tim Kaine has a radio show where he takes calls from constituents. This morning he received a call from a "Barry in D.C".

Tiger Woods only has himself to blame.

Sooner or later these people will figure it out right? They are chased by cameras and reporters pretty much everywhere they go. Every little detail of their lives are scrutinized to the utmost degree. These people take full advantage of the fame and riches that come their way but unfortunately a lot of them let it get to their heads.

Tiger Woods is just the most recent in a long list of athletes who has failed not just his family and image but his fans as well. We hear all the time that what these people do on their own time is none of our business. I agree with that to a certain point but not when the individual involved has made hundreds of millions of dollars based on his image. If you want to ruin your marriage and family life, go right ahead as it is purely your decision but don't try to insult our intelligence by appearing in a million different commercials and pitch products. As it turns out you lied to and shamed your family. Why shouldn't we take anything you say with a grain of salt?

Earlier this year Tiger Woods became the World's first Billionaire athlete.

Why is it that these people deny these stories when they first get reported? This isn't the era of Babe Ruth or Mickey Mantle. You can't even compare it to the 90s. There are just so many media platforms out there that the truth in matters like this pretty much always comes out. In this era of Twitter and TMZ there is no hiding. People would probably be a lot more sympathetic if these guys admitted to their mistakes right away. The lame excuses these guys make only makes matters worse as the lies they tell are so bad that all it does is lead more people to dig into your personal life. Seriously, did anyone believe anything Tiger Woods or his agents said in the days after the accident?

Why is it that privacy only matters to these guys when they do something wrong? Where is Tiger Woods' search for privacy when he's doing commercials for Nike, Gatorate or Gillette? Where is his request for privacy when his picture gets plastered in sporting goods stores and billboards around the world? Where is his request for privacy when he's releasing his own video game everywhere and wants to be in the room of every kid with an XBox, PS3 or a Wii? Where is his request for privacy when he is making close to $100 million a year in endorsement money? He gets caught being an idiot and suddenly we are supposed to pretend that this is a private matter? I feel for his wife Elin Nordegren. Right now there are people digging into her life because of what Tiger Woods did.

I should mention that I have never been the world's biggest Tiger Woods fan. Don't get me wrong, you can't help but be impressed by his resume on the golf course but Tiger Woods the man has never been easy to root for. He's been an obnoxious bully and if he was anyone but Tiger Woods he would have faced a major backlash over the years. If you haven't seen it for yourself just go check out some of the Tiger Woods clips on Youtube. Golf holds itself to a ridiculous uptight standard that doesn't even let fans bring cameras or cell phones to a golf course yet Tiger Wood's antics get excused.

This isn't some new phenomenon either. Tiger has been cursing and throwing clubs around for a long time now. When he's not doing something himself he has his caddy to the dirty work for him. We've all seen his antics on TV. Remember him tossing someone's camera a couple of years ago? PGA Tour officials continue to look the other way because he's Tiger Woods.

I was in attendance for the Final Round of The Barclays earlier this year. My Brother and I considered following Tiger Woods around for the day but gave up on it after jut two holes. He doesn't interact with the fans at all. There were little kids yelling his name as he walked up the fairway and he wouldn't even look over and nod. Yet, his galleries were huge based on his name alone. We decided to follow Padraig Harrington instead and he was simply amazing. He was right there in contention with Tiger Woods but the contrast in their behavior on the course was remarkable. Harrington took time on each hole to interact with fans (especially little kids). Phil Mickelson was also really friendly with the crowd despite being way behind the leaders at this event. Watching Tiger Woods in person that day made me even happier that I have never rooted for him in his professional career.

The sporting world fell in love with Tiger Woods and his father in the mid 90s because it was a great story. It is just unfortunate that like so many others Tiger Woods the man is not half as easy to like as Tiger Woods the athlete. If you want to live a public life and make the ridiculous amount of money based on your name alone, you can't be a hypocrite and ask for privacy in a matter like this. You can't have it both ways.

Reality TV crashes the State Dinner?

Two "Reality" TV participants wanting to be famous crash a State Dinner at the White House and no one catches them. No, this is not the plot from some TV Show or movie, apparently it actually happened.

Just what is going on here? I reported from a Bill Clinton event last month that the security presence there was a joke. Who can forget the Boston Globe report earlier this year on how overworked the Secret Service is? I was also at the Daily Show taping in August when author Ronald Kessler was the guest and spoke about the problems at the Secret Service.

This event last night is just down right scary. All over the country there are nut jobs with a hatred for this man. There is an entire Cable Network and right wing radio that is doing nothing but spreading lies about this President. These whackos are inspiring other whackos. Someone please tell me that it is not this easy to get into the White House. Anyone?

Perino: "We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term"

We are all well aware of Fox's lies and propaganda. We all know that the majority of the time they just make stuff up. We know they are and have always just been the communication department of the Republican Pary. They have so much practice at lying and spewing crap that they thought this phrase actually made sense.

Yes, that was Dana Perino, a Press Secretary in the Dubya administration. Yes, you did just hear her say that there was no terrorist attack while Dubya was President. Gotta love how Hannity and the other ignorant fool on the panel don't even bother to jump in and correct Perino. I don't care how minor of a role Obama just nominated Perino for....that nomination should be withdrawn immediately.

Credit to Media Matters once again for their brilliant work.

One year ago.....

Can you believe it has been a whole year since Barack Obama was elected President? Where were you when you found out he had won? How was your voting experience? I am a Canadian so obviously did not vote in NJ but the Hyder family did have its own Election Headquarters.

I've spent parts of the morning going back and reading election coverage from that week but taking a break now to watch the Daily Show/Colbert Report Special from that night.

New Jersey voters failed themselves today

This New Jersey Governor's election result is a disaster on so many levels. Nationally you'll hear this being a referendum on Obama when it clearly wasn't. New Jersey voters did what ignorant voters often do; vote out the incumbent without thinking of what the alternative is. Corzine hasn't been popular but yet again the electorate failed to see the consequences of their vote. It was easy voting out Corzine over the last 4 years but unfortunately New Jersey didn't think about the next 4 years. There are 4 scheduled openings on the New Jersey Supreme Court in next 4 years thanks to New Jersey's mandatory retirement age. Yes, Chris Christie gets to fill those. This is a potential disaster waiting to happen. I don't trust Christie at all on social issues. New Jersey has an 85 year old Senator in Frank Lautenberg who didn't look well at a recent event I attended. I thought he would retire if Corzine won and let him pick someone to replace him....unfortunately Chris Christie would fill that opening now.

A couple of quick closing thoughts as the work begins again. Is Cory Booker going to run in 2013 for Governor or will he hold off for a Senate Run in 2014? Is Jon Corzine headed to D.C to work in the Obama administration?

Obama/Corzine (09!) Rally in Newark

The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ was buzzing today. It was a buzz I'm sure has never been present for any New Jersey Devils game....ever. Today was not your typical Sunday in Newark though. Barack Obama was back in New Jersey to campaign for Governor Jon Corzine's reelection.

I've been spoiled recently with all the great seats at these rallies here in New Jersey so today felt like I was sitting a long way away. We were up in the nosebleed section but managed to work our way down to the lower level unfortunately just now close enough to get a better view. What made it even worse was that it appeared as though they took people from the nosebleed section and brought them down right in front of the stage moments before Governor Corzine and President Obama took the stage. I got there around 9:30 and got a decent enough spot in line. Gates opened at 11:30 AM. This was the 2nd event of the day schdeduled in New Jersey for Obama and Corzine yet Obama hadn't even left Washington yet. I had figured we'd be there for a while.

The event itself seemed to go by a lot quicker compared to other recent events. We didn't have as many local speakers so that definitely helped with the pace. The event just started abruptly. The national anthem was already a couple of verses in before the crowd got up. There was no announcement made asking everyone to stand as it is usually done. Three congressmen spoke but the crowd didn't care much at all even when they were using Obama campaign slogans of "Fired Up!" and "Yes we Can." The last congressman Frank Pallone introduced Loretta Weinberg who interestingly enough was at the event early. Was she not at the Camden event?

Loretta Weinberg used the same themes as her speeches last week as the rallies last week. He speech centered around the diverse crowd and how it reflected the Democrats. Senator Weinberg also referred to Christie as a "pretender" adding that he was "trying to sell himself as an agent of change". The Senator went on to add that if Christie wants to talk change he should come to her because she "broke more glass ceilings than Chris Christie has had automobile accidents....and that's not easy". Ouch! This of course is a knock on Chris Christie's driving record. I was going to add that unlike the events of last week we got no mentions of Sarah Palin or Mark Sanford. Why did they drop that? I thought it was a pretty effective attack on Christie.

Up next was Mayor Cory Booker of Newark. I assumed he was there to introduce Jon Corzine but I was wrong. If you haven't heard him speak you definitely should. He's going to be next Senator (once Lautenberg retires) or next Governor from New Jersey. Doesn't hurt that Barack Obama seems to be a fan as he mentions him at all his New Jersey stops. This is a mayor who has done great work in Newark. This is a mayor who actually goes on patrol with the city's cops at night actually being in touch with what is going on in the streets of his city. Not to anyone's surprise he got a louder cheer at this rally than Governor Corzine. Cory Booker joined a long list of people who've pitched Jon Corzine in a better fashion then John Corzine. Booker spoke with his usual optimism adding "Yes We Can in Washington!....Yes We Can in Trenton!....Yes We Can in Newark!....Yes We Can!" Cory Booker rallied the crowd to stand behind Barack Obama and Jon Corzine in these tough times.

While Jon Corzine was having this big rally Chris Christie had Joe "You Lie" Wilson campaigning on his behalf.

When Jon Corzine didn't immediately take stage following Cory Booker's speech I figured another last minute addition had been to this event like the Caroline Kennedy addition at the FDU event last week. No such luck this time.

Crowd was fired up during this long pause. This DJ did a great job getting the crowd fired up just as he did at the Obama and Biden rallies last week here in NJ. There was actually an attempted wave. That one just confused me.

Governor Corzine referred to this as a "victory rally". He once again referred to the diverse crowd. He reminded everyone (just in case we had forgotten) that a year ago at the polls we said "Yes We Can!" Corzine added that just like President Obama he believes that "Health Care is a right and not a privilege." Corzine emphasized that "Christie is wrong where it matters most." The Governor hit his opponent hard on education and healthcare. Chris Christie's comments about pre-school being "babysitting" keeps hurting him as every speaker at every rally I've been at has mentioned it. Corzine referred to himself in 3rd person a couple of times which was awkward. Corzine made sure to mention that Chris Christie was campaigning today with the "extremist" Joe Wilson of South Carolina.

Has anyone heard an official attendance number from this rally? Someone mentioned to be that White House Officials said 12,000. I saw Corzine people say 13,500. I had estimated a crowd of around 10,000 from how packed the arena was.

The ovation for Barack Obama was just huge. New Jersey loves Barack Obama. Phil Elliot of the Associated Press compared the crowd noise to the 2008 campaign crowds. Barack Obama started by saying that he was back as he promised and that "they" couldn't keep him away. Was that a dig at the recent GOP comments from Christie people saying Obama visits aren't helping Corzine? Obama pointed out "one of the finest mayors in the country Cory Booker is in the house." Obama went after Christie saying he acts as though New Jersey is the only state effected by the recession. Obama pointed out that recession didn't start under his watch. Obama talked about the selective memory and amnesia about how we got into this mess. The President said that "we don't mind cleaning up after someone else's mess." Obama brought out the "mop" portion of speech too. Implying that if GOP wouldn't help clean the least they could do was not complain about "how we're holding the mop." One thing about Obama that I've noticed, he responds to every single "I love you Obama!" each and every time. Obama pointed out that Governor is the first NJ Governor in 60 years to reduce size of government in state. Obama said to not worry about political nonsense in ads and to look at the actual record. Obama said Corzine had been prudent with spending. He applauded Corzine's expansion of children health insurance and added that the other guy has nothing to say on health care. Obama ended with an abbreviated version of the "fired up" story. Does anyone know if it was because the congressman beat the story to death before Obama even got to the event?

Full transcript of Obama's speech.

Earlier in the day President Obama also campaigned for Jon Corzine in Camden.
